# The White House: Remember Reformation Day, Not Halloween

- Description: On October 31, 2026, the White House marked Reformation Day with a message that names salvation by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ. In nearly a century of presidential records, I found only one earlier message like it, and it said far less.

This morning, October 31, the Trump White House published a [Presidential Message on Reformation Day](https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2026/10/presidential-message-on-reformation-day/?ref=threefold.2x1.io). When I went looking for anything like it from earlier presidents, I came back nearly empty-handed. Not a word on Halloween. But a whole lot on the Bible and core Biblical truths.

Let’s dive in.

I’m going to walk you through what the message says, how it compares with the one real precedent, and why I think Christians should take note. Even critics of Donald Trump.

## Trump: “Guided by an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ”

The message opens with a line you would expect in a sermon more than a press release. It honors "the countless Christians across our country commemorating the Protestant Reformation and its enduring message of salvation by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ."

That is the heart of the Reformation in one sentence. Grace, not merit. Faith, not ritual. Christ, not any priest or institution standing in His place.

The message goes on to William Tyndale, who, "inspired by the work of Martin Luther," gave English speakers "the first New Testament printed in English." Tyndale's New Testament came off the press in 1526, so this year is its 500th anniversary. The White House ties that Bible to America's founding, saying the Scriptures "helped form the religious convictions that formed our young Nation's founding ideals of God-given rights and individual liberty."

Then it states a commitment: "Guided by an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, my Administration is working to restore the moral and religious foundations that have sustained our Republic for generations." It closes by encouraging Americans "to draw renewed strength from God's Word."

The President did more than wish Lutherans well. He stated the gospel of grace and credited the Bible with shaping American liberty.

## Has any president done this before?

Only once, as far as I can find, and it was a much smaller thing.

In October 1930, President Herbert Hoover sent a short [Message to American Lutherans on the Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation](https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/message-american-lutherans-the-anniversary-the-protestant-reformation?ref=threefold.2x1.io). It went to the business manager of *The American Lutheran* and was printed in that magazine's October issue. Hoover sent "cordial greetings to the Americans of Lutheran faith," marked the 400th anniversary of the reading of the Augsburg Confession, and said the Reformation's effects show up in American life "in religion through the predominant numbers of adherents to Protestant faiths and in Government through the principle of separation of church and state."

It was a gracious note, but Hoover wrote it to one denomination, through one magazine. He treated the Reformation as a historical force. He never mentioned grace, Christ or the Bible.

I also searched [The American Presidency Project](https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/?ref=threefold.2x1.io), the archive at UC Santa Barbara that collects presidential documents. A search for "Protestant Reformation" turns up just two presidential messages devoted to the subject: Hoover's in 1930 and this one in 2026\. A search for "Reformation Day" turns up only this one. Other presidents have mentioned the Reformation in passing in speeches, but I could not find another message of this kind.

Congress has come closer than presidents have. On the 500th anniversary in 2017, Representative Glenn Grothman introduced [H. Res. 597](https://www.congress.gov/115/bills/hres597/BILLS-115hres597ih.pdf?ref=threefold.2x1.io), "Recognizing 500 years since the Protestant Reformation and its significance for many Americans." The record shows it was referred to committee, and I found no sign that it ever passed. Either way, that was a resolution in Congress, not a word from the President.

So for 96 years there was one short greeting to Lutherans. Now there is a presidential message that states the gospel itself. Makes you wonder what Christians who hate Trump will come up with now to refute this very clear pro-Christian stance?

## One of many

This message fits a pattern. In February 2025 the President signed an order on [Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/eradicating-anti-christian-bias/?ref=threefold.2x1.io), which states the policy "to protect the religious freedoms of Americans and end the anti-Christian weaponization of government." The next day he [established the White House Faith Office](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/02/establishment-of-the-white-house-faith-office/?ref=threefold.2x1.io) to help churches and faith-based groups serve their communities. In May 2025 he created the [Religious Liberty Commission](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/05/establishment-of-the-religious-liberty-commission/?ref=threefold.2x1.io).

His [Holy Week message in 2025](https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/message-the-observance-holy-week-2025?ref=threefold.2x1.io) called Jesus Christ "the living Son of God who conquered death, freed us from sin, and unlocked the gates of Heaven for all of humanity," and promised "to defend the Christian faith in our schools, military, workplaces, hospitals, and halls of government."

Different Christians from different ”camps” will weigh all of this differently, but still, can you think of a time in living memory when the White House has named the Christian faith this plainly and this often? Go ahead, challenge me on this! I’ll wait.

## Why Tyndale belongs in this story

The presidential Reformation Day message is right to bring up Tyndale. He translated the New Testament from the Greek because, as John Foxe tells it, he wanted “*the boy who drives the plough to know more of the Scripture than the learned clergy*.” The authorities of the time saw that as dangerous. His books were burned, and in 1536 he was strangled and burned at the stake. Foxe records his last prayer: "Lord, open the King of England's eyes."

Much of the English Bible that America's founding generation read, the King James Version, follows Tyndale's wording. Tyndale asked God to open the eyes of one king. Five hundred years later, an American president is honoring the Bible he died to give us. I doubt Tyndale could have imagined it. No Kings protesters probably never did, either.

## The message behind the message

A presidential statement cannot “save“ anyone spiritually. Neither can a nation's heritage, however Christian its roots. The Reformers would be the first to say so.

What the White House named today is what saves: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8-9). Luther found that truth in Romans: "The just shall live by faith" (Romans 1:17). Tyndale died so ordinary people could read it for themselves.

So, on this Reformation Day, do what the President encouraged and what the Reformers lived for. Open God's Word. Read Romans. Read the Gospel of John. If you have never trusted Christ, know that you cannot earn His grace and you do not have to. It is a gift, received by faith.

And if you already know Him, thank God for the men and women who paid dearly so that you could hold a Bible in your own language. Then go and share it.
