*A home for learning about Christian Hebraism, the Hebrew roots of our faith, and the long, often forgotten story of Christians who went back to the Hebrew text and to Jewish teachers.*

Today I'm glad to announce that the Hebraica Veritas Wiki is live at its new home, [wiki.threefold.life](https://wiki.threefold.life/?ref=threefold.2x1.io). It's a free, open library on Christian Hebraism, Judaism, Christian-Jewish relations and the Hebraic foundation of the Christian faith.

This project didn't appear overnight. The wiki has been in the works for a couple of years. However, we hit a technical bottleneck and work on it was halted. The project has now been restored, cleaned up and we’re relaunching today!

## Why a Wiki?

A wiki is simply a website that a community writes together. Every topic gets its own page, and every page links to related pages. That simple design makes it one of the best tools for learning any subject.

A wiki lets you follow your curiosity. For example, you start with Johannes Reuchlin and a link takes you to his Jewish Hebrew teacher. From there you find the printing press, and suddenly you see how the pieces fit together. Learning by connecting seemingly disconnected bits pieces of information is how most of us actually learn.

A wiki keeps sources close. Our pages point to the original studies, encyclopedias and libraries we drew from, so that you can check the claims for yourself. We don't want anyone to take our word for it. We want people to search the Scriptures and the record, like the Bereans did.

A wiki also remembers. Every edit is saved in the page's history, so changes are open and mistakes can be traced and corrected. And because many people can contribute, a wiki gets better over time. One editor adds a source, another corrects a date, a third writes a new article. For students, teachers, pastors and anyone who loves the Bible, that kind of shared, growing and correctable resource is a real gift.

## What Is Christian Hebraism?

*Hebraica veritas* means "the Hebrew truth." The phrase goes back to Jerome, who [translated the Bible from Greek and Hebrew into Latin](https://wiki.threefold.life/jerome?ref=threefold.2x1.io), and it came to stand for a simple conviction: if we want to know what God said, we need to go back to the Hebrew.

Christian Hebraism is the movement of Christians who did exactly that. Historically, as the [wiki's home page](https://wiki.threefold.life/start?ref=threefold.2x1.io) explains, it was the use of Hebrew and rabbinic sources by Christians, especially in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The results were dramatic: the Old Testament was re-translated, the New Testament was re-read and long-held doctrines were re-examined. And it happened, paradoxically, through close cooperation with Jewish scholars.

That matters to me and frankly, if should matter to anyone who calls themselves a Christian, or a believer. Jesus was a Jew. Not an Eskimo, Indian, or Scandinavian. He prayed, taught and lived as a Jew, among Jews, in the land of Israel. The apostles were Jews. The Scriptures He read were the Hebrew Scriptures. We can't understand our faith properly while we ignore the people and the language through which God gave it.

## A Few Stories from the Wiki

Here are a few of the stories you'll find in the wiki.

Long before the Reformation, Origen of Alexandria [sought out Jewish teachers](https://wiki.threefold.life/the%5Fjews%5Fin%5Fthe%5Fwritings%5Fof%5Forigen?ref=threefold.2x1.io) to help him with Hebrew and with the plain, literal sense of the Old Testament. He admired the rabbinic practice of comparing one biblical passage with another, and that method later became a principal tool of Christian Bible study.

In the Middle Ages, [Nicholas of Lyra](https://wiki.threefold.life/13th%5Fcentury?ref=threefold.2x1.io) mastered Hebrew and drew heavily on the commentaries of the great Jewish teacher Rashi. His *Postillae* became the favorite handbook for interpreting Scripture and, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia, the first Bible commentary ever printed. His learning won the respect of Jews and Christians alike.

The German scholar [Johannes Reuchlin](https://wiki.threefold.life/johannes%5Freuchlin?ref=threefold.2x1.io) learned Hebrew on diplomatic missions to Italy. From 1498 to 1500 his private Hebrew teacher was a Jewish physician and rabbi, [Obadiah ben Jacob Sforno](https://wiki.threefold.life/obadaiah%5Fben%5Fjacob%5Fsforno?ref=threefold.2x1.io). Years later, when a campaign arose to destroy Jewish books and an imperial commission endorsed it, Reuchlin was the only member to dissent. He was accused of "Judaism," brought before the Inquisition, and finally condemned and fined by the pope in 1520\. Luther and his followers saw his persecution as a forerunner of the Reformation. The wiki is honest that Reuchlin had his own misgivings about Jews, but his stand for Hebrew books still speaks to us.

His contemporary [Erasmus of Rotterdam](https://wiki.threefold.life/erasmus%5Fof%5Frotterdam?ref=threefold.2x1.io) put it bluntly in 1515: "Who does not master all three holy tongues \[Hebrew, Greek, and Latin\], is not a theologian, but a violator of the holy Theology."

The [printing press](https://wiki.threefold.life/the%5Fprinting%5Fpress%5Fand%5Fchristian%5Fhebraica?ref=threefold.2x1.io) arrived at just the right moment. Christian Hebraists needed Hebrew Bibles, rabbinic commentaries, grammars and dictionaries, and they became an important market for the early printers of Hebrew books.

Jewish teachers were central to the story. [Abraham de Balmes](https://wiki.threefold.life/abraham%5Fben%5Fmeir%5Fde%5Fbalmes?ref=threefold.2x1.io), a Jewish physician in Italy, lectured to Christian audiences and wrote a Hebrew grammar that was the first to treat syntax as its own part of grammar. When he died in 1523, his Christian students honored his memory. In seventeenth-century England, [Isaac Abendana](https://wiki.threefold.life/isaac%5Fabendana?ref=threefold.2x1.io), a Sephardi Jew, taught Hebrew at Oxford and Cambridge and produced the first Latin translation of the Mishnah. His almanac showed English readers how the Christian and Jewish calendars line up.

The wiki doesn't hide the darker side either. Its page on [Christian antisemitism](https://wiki.threefold.life/christian%5Fantisemitism?ref=threefold.2x1.io) lets Jewish sources speak, because they are the ones who suffered. Our only response as Christians is repentance. Christian Hebraism, rightly understood, is never about Christianity replacing Israel. It's about honoring the root that supports us (Romans 11:18).

## Come and Learn

I invite you to visit [wiki.threefold.life](https://wiki.threefold.life/?ref=threefold.2x1.io) and begin to explore. A good place to start is the [Introduction to Christian Hebraism](https://wiki.threefold.life/introduction%5Fto%5Fchristian%5Fhebraism?ref=threefold.2x1.io), or the list of [Hebraists through the centuries](https://wiki.threefold.life/christian%5Fhebraists?ref=threefold.2x1.io), from the early Church to our own day.

If you love research, we'd love your help. You can [sign up as an editor](https://wiki.threefold.life/start?do=register&ref=threefold.2x1.io) on the wiki. New edits are reviewed before they appear, so the wiki stays accurate and trustworthy. We are looking for researchers, writers, proofreaders and editors. See [how you can contribute](https://wiki.threefold.life/to%5Fcontribute%5Fclick%5Fhere?ref=threefold.2x1.io).

## Calling Translators

We are also looking at expanding the wiki into other languages, and we're looking for translators. If you're fluent in another language and would like to help bring this material to your people, please contact us through [threefold.life](https://threefold.life/?ref=threefold.2x1.io), or write to us at [info@threefold.life](mailto:info@threefold.life). We'd be glad to hear from you.

May the Lord use this work to draw many back to the Hebrew truth of His Word, and to a deeper love for the Jewish Messiah, Yeshua, and for His people.
